The dividing
line between the descriptions 'search engine marketing' and
'search engine optimization' is not sharp and clear cut. The latter is in fact
a form of the former and the former cannot exist without the latter. The two
expressions are like conjoined twins who are different and same at the same
time.
search engine marketing, commonly known as SEM, is the marketing of web sites to get them a sought-after place in the results that search engines spew forth in answer to every customer query. Different online and offline marketing tactics are used to grab this right place in the search engine results, known as search engine ranking. The more common of these online search engine marketing methods are search engine optimization of the site, blogging, article writing, pay per click advertising, and paid inclusion.
While each of these search engine marketing methods is different in its own way, search engine optimization is common to all the methods. The first SEM technique, search engine optimization of the site, requires that the site be sculpted as much as possible to make it acceptable to the search engines. Having the right keyword throughout the site in the required density, and having back links are the requirements for optimizing the site. Right keywords and links attract search engines like magnet.
Next search engine marketing technique is blogging. A blog is a sort of a journal or diary that the writer can
steadily update and so far as
the contents of the blog are good, readers will again and again come back for
more on the topic. However, even for these blogs to get noticed, they must be
search engine optimized with the right keywords. As such, though blogging is a
different mode of expression, it will serve the purpose of search
engine marketing better, if it is optimized to suit the proclivities
of search engines.
Article writing is also a very effective technique for search engine marketing as skilled writers can spin words and drive home a point or describe a product. However, because of the method of working of search engines, even the best article will go unnoticed if the search engines do not pick them up.
