Your company brochure is an extremely important part of the identity of your business. In fact it could well be the most important part. More often than not you will find that direct mail brochures are the first impression prospective customers and clients will have of your company. Therefore producing an impressive brochure is a must. Before you get into commercial brochure printing there are certain key facts that you need to keep in mind. This article outlines five of them.

Tip 1: Select the right kind of paper

Selecting the right kind of paper is half the battle when creating an appealing brochure design. Once the content and theme have been decided on, this should be the next step. Choosing the right paper will depend on factors like the kind of printing, whether or not there will be other treatment like varnishing, lamination or coating that will be done post printing, and the general look that the final product needs to have.

All papers fall within the broad categories of matte, glossy, textured and plain. It would be a wise idea to consult with your printer, as they will be able to give you an accurate idea as to what paper and post printing treatment you should be using.

Tip 2: Decide on the size of your print

Once you have chosen the paper you want to work with, you will need to decide on the final size of the brochure. This will depend on the concept you have in mind as well. It is important that you decide on the size once you have chosen the paper to work with so that you ensure that your brochure printing job is using the paper with minimum wastage. It is also important that you keep your designer informed of the size. It will be a waste of time
and money if they design a layout on a size that is not in keeping with the size that you have in mind.

Tip 3: Always allow for a print bleed

Most brochure printing companies will tell you that you need to design your artwork a little smaller than the paper that it is going to be printed on. This is to allow for what is called printing bleed and is extremely important. Allowing a small amount of space on your layout for a printing bleed ensures a neat and clean finish to the edges of your brochure printing. This happens because the little damage that is caused to the edges of the paper during printing is cut off after the job is complete. The ideal amount of bleed that should be left all around from the edge of the design is 1/8th of an inch.

Tip 4: Make sure you have the right resolution

If high quality brochure printing is what you are looking for then it is imperative that you ensure that the quality of the images you are going to use are up to the mark. You must keep in mind that the images that you see on the computer screen require a resolution of just 72 dpi whereas an image that requires printing needs a dpi of at least 300. Dpi refers to dots per inch which basically translates into the more dots you have per inch the finer your image will appear. For most printing jobs an image at 300 dpi is more than enough.

Tip 5: Originality and creativity

The last tip that we have to offer you is perhaps the one that should be at the top of your list. If you are planning to advertise your business with brochures then your priority should be originality and creativity. You must remember that yours is not the only business that uses brochures to reach its potential customers and therefore your brochure should have the capacity to stand out amongst the others in order to make an impact.
