Sometimes if you lose a lot of weight quickly, the skin tends to form wrinkles. Wrinkles can appear on the neck, around the eyes and mouth and this is because the skin is no longer supported by the fat cells which have disappeared with weight loss. When you have worked very hard to lose weight, it can be very discouraging to discover signs of wrinkles but there are ways of avoiding wrinkles with weight loss and things that you can do to reduce the appearance of wrinkles when you have successfully lost a lot of weight.
If you have had cosmetic surgery to correct being overweight, then there will usually be a follow up procedure to correct any problems with excess skin, but for those who have lost weight as a result of illness, recent stress or bereavement, or simply by having successfully followed a diet plan, you may find that in places your skin may form wrinkles, or appear to sag and give you an older appearance. Rather than dive into the next available tub of ice cream to restore your appearance to normal, and before you resort to an invasive surgeon’s knife, consider the self-help options to get your skin looking good again.
One way to avoid drastic changes to your appearance with weight loss is to maintain a slow but steady approach to the issue of losing weight. If you lose weight slow but surely, your skin may have a chance to adjust to the process and so will not be so traumatized
by a sudden loss of weight.
As you lose weight, keep up an exercise program to keep your muscles fit and strong – maintaining healthy muscles means that you might lose some of your weight loss target because of the gain in weight caused by the development of stronger muscles, but gaining extra muscle tone with weight loss is a good way to keep your skin from forming wrinkles or from appearing to sag. Particularly under the chin, a set of exercises for the jaw will help to keep your face looking fine, and reduce wrinkles to the neck.
Apply nourishing crèmes and oils to keep your face and body looking soft and supple during weight loss and although your skin may feel looser, it will not wrinkle or give you the appearance of looking older. Having regular relaxation massage during weight loss is good because it helps to normalize your skin, and eases muscle tension which is known to cause fine lines and eventually wrinkles.
You will avoid possible drying of your skin when on a weight loss diet if you take care to include a variety of foods, and all of the vitamins and minerals, especially zinc, which are needed to nourish your skin. Always remember that maintaining an adequate level of water in your diet is more important than recording a weight loss of a few more points, which is really due to de-hydration. Good hydration during weight loss will assist good nutrition, help to eliminate toxins, keep your skin looking fresh and clear and will reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
