Among the five senses, vision is undoubtedly the most important. It is as important to keep the eyes healthy as it is important to keep the body healthy. People around the planet rely on their eyes to see and comprehend the world around them. However, some defects of vision can lead to blindness making it extremely important to identify and treat such defects as early as possible. One should always get his or her eyes checked as often as recommended by the doctor.
Some defects are more common than others such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia etc. Nearsightedness is also known as Myopia. A person suffering from myopia typically will have difficulty in seeing distant objects clearly such as road-signs or blackboard in a class room from the last bench, but will have no difficulty in viewing nearby objects for close-up tasks such as reading and operating the computer.
Farsightedness is opposite of Myopia. It is also known as Hypermetropia. Anybody suffering from Hypermetropia can see distant objects clearly but will have difficulty viewing nearby objects. Hence, they will have difficulty in everyday tasks involving close distance viewing such as reading or typing.
Presbyopia generally occurs at old age when the ciliary muscle that adjusts the eye lens to focus at objects at different distances weakens. Similar to Hypermetropia, a person suffering from presbyopia cannot see nearby objects clearly but can see distant objects clearly.
Myopia & Hypermetropia can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery. Apart from these defects of the eye, there are numerous other kinds of diseases such as infections, cataract, night-blindness etc.
Glasses now-a-days have become a fashion accessory. People use glasses and contact lenses not only as a remedy for eye defect but also to protect their eyes from dust and smoke and other toxic gases. Contact lenses are becoming more and more popular among the younger generation. A lot of children wearing spectacles want to change to contact lens. Contact lenses not only improve a child’s confidence in their appearance but they also prove to be very convenient for children who play sports as they often tend to lose or break their glasses. But before anyone gets a contact lens or eye glasses, it is important to get the eyes tested to check for vision and eye problems.
As sight is one of the greatest gift of nature, we must take care to keep our eyes healthy by following simple tips such as eating a healthy diet which include plenty of fruits and vegetables, wearing protective eye wear such as sunglasses and is anybody is wearing contact lenses then one must follow the proper handling steps to avoid eye infections. Following simple eye care tips and timely visit to the doctor in case of any difficulty in vision can go a long way in avoiding many serious eye diseases and providing healthy eyes as it is said that eyes are the window to the soul.
